Job Summary

Kleinfelder is seeking a full-time Project Director/Senior Archaeologist to support work in the Western Pacific (primarily Guam) from our office in Tumon, Guam.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this position will be to direct cultural resources management projects in Guam. This will include planning and directing multiple archaeological projects simultaneously with the help of KLF’s Senior Program Manager/Principal Investigator; coordinating with clients, government agencies (e.g., Guam SHPO), and community entities; assisting with budget preparation and tracking; supervising/training/mentoring junior staff; and ensuring technical accuracy of field investigations, data and laboratory analysis, and report preparation and analysis.

Other responsibilities and expectations for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure technical accuracy and high quality of archaeological work products.
  • Serve as lead author and technical reviewer of archaeological reports.
  • Train junior staff to recognize archaeological resources in the field and perform archaeological recording tasks (e.g., mapping and preparing thorough written documentation and measured stratigraphic profiles).
  • Train/mentor KLF staff in preparing technical write-ups, including how to interpret archaeological findings and relay that information to internal and external reviewers.
  • Periodic travel and work outdoors in remote locations and for extended periods under all weather conditions (especially high heat and humidity), sometimes in rugged terrain and conditions.
  • Help promote and maintain a safe, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
  • Serve as a role model to junior staff.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form.
  • Assist with business operations, to include budget preparation, tracking, and management.

Technical Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Anthropology/Archaeology.
  • Minimum of 5 years demonstrated, full-time experience working on archaeological projects in the Pacific and/or Asia Region, with progressive and documented experience toward full directing of research efforts/projects, particularly in the CRM industry. This includes documented supervision of archaeological teams.
  • Must be a strong technical writer with a minimum of 3 years of experience as a lead author on technical archaeological reports with demonstrated experience carrying research to completion (if selected for an interview, candidate will be required to submit three writing samples).
  • The ability to independently identify Pre-Contact and Historic Period cultural resources.
  • Strong working knowledge of National Historic Preservation Act (Section 106, Section 110), National Environmental Policy Act, and associated federal and state laws and regulations. Candidates who have demonstrated experience learning to carry projects through historic preservation compliance will be prioritized.
  • Guam, Hawai’i, and/or other Pacific Island experience is strongly preferred; cultural sensitivity and awareness is required.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Proficient with digital field technology (Trimble GPS) and familiar with GIS applications and software.
  • Ability to lead a team and delegate tasks as necessary.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and respond quickly while working in the field or office.
  • Ability to plan and manage multiple archaeological projects simultaneously, including coordinating with clients, budget tracking, supervising staff, and overseeing field investigations, data and laboratory analysis, and report writing.
  • Ability to independently plan and organize work to meet fast-paced deadlines.
  • Must be attentive to organization, detail, and accuracy.
  • Ability to work well with and as part of a team, especially during rugged field conditions.

Employment Requirements

  • Must have a satisfactory driving record and complete a background check.
  • Must complete a pre-employment physical to ensure fitness for duty.

Pay is commensurate with experience and qualifications and starts at $99,000 annual salary for fully qualified candidates.
