This semester UHWO archaeology students will be working at Kalaeloa Heritage Park, helping to record site features that were located during the Summer 2021 field school. This work will consist of mapping features with tape and compass maps, a total station, and plane table mapping. Students will also learn how to describe sites on field recording forms. Students will then learn how to add this data to an ArcGIS database for use by the park. This project is community-driven, as requested by the Kalaeloa Park board of directors and volunteers, for the purpose of preserving and protecting the historical places in the park and sharing this history with the public. Students will produce educational material for the park to use as part of this goal. While we will not be excavating at the park, students will have the chance to learn excavation techniques through a mock excavation on the UHWO campus.
