Archaeology Collections Technician Intern

The Archaeology Collections Technician Intern is responsible for assisting the Collections Manager in activities associated with collections care, preservation, and access of the Kamehameha Schools archaeological collections at Bishop Museum. This position is a limited 1-year fixed-term paid internship that provides an opportunity to gain experience and insight into heritage and museum management.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with the processing, care, and maintenance of collections in accordance with Museum and department policies and procedures, and federal and state law.
  • Participates in the identification, recording, digitization, and organization of the collections and records according to departmental and disciplinary standards to enhance access and retrieval of materials for study and exhibition.
  • Assists with the maintenance of storage systems, monitoring of environmental conditions, and appropriately secures the collection to ensure the physical welfare of the collections and associated records.
  • Assists with visitors, tours, special programs, and other department public outreach opportunities as needed.
  • Works in a safe manner so as not to endanger the collections, fellow staff members, volunteers, and visitors. Complies with safety rules and regulations and establishes safe work practices.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned, to accomplish the goals of the Museum.


  • B.A. or B.S. in Anthropology/Archaeology preferred, although students completing an undergraduate degree in Anthropology or a related field will be considered.
  • 1-2 years prior experience working with collections preferred.
  • Experience with cultural resources management, Hawaiian/Pacific Archaeology, digitization, photogrammetry, archaeology laboratory work, museum software, conservation, or other relevant skills will be considered.

  • Flexibility in working hours, as some evening and weekend work is required.
  • Good attendance with a professional attitude and business-like appearance.
  • Detail oriented with good follow-through and ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
  • Ability to maintain composure when working under time constraints and to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow instructions.
  • Computer-literate with the ability to use/learn various computer applications; familiarity with Microsoft and Adobe products.

Direct Reports: None.

Working Conditions: Occasional evening and weekend work required.

Physical Requirements: Occasionally required to stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, lift heavy objects, and do repetitive tasks with few breaks.

Hours: Full-time, Hourly, Non-Exempt
