Opening for Two Regular/Full-Time Cultural Resources Technicians at RCUH

RCUH/PACIFIC COOPERATIVE STUDIES UNIT

CULTURAL RESOURCES TECHNICIAN (PTA) – ID# 14004.  Two (2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service positions with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU) performing project tasks on land controlled by U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii at Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) on the Island of Hawaii.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

DUTIES: Provides day-to-day support in implementing the Island of Hawaii Cultural Resource Program Scope of Work (SOW).  Serves as PCSU-PTA Cultural Resources Technician to perform assigned tasks to implement programs developed by the Cultural Resources Program Manager U.S. Army Hawaii (USARHAW).  Works to support of all fieldwork, including accompanying cultural accesses, monitoring, pedestrian survey, data collection and input, and coordination of assigned tasks/projects.  Becomes familiar with installation plans, undertakings, and cultural studies and inventories. Works in areas with Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) with professional Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) supervision.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Archaeology, Cultural Resources Management, or related field.  

Experience: Field school or at least three (3) months experience in archaeological fieldwork, ethnography, or similar experience.

Abil/Know/Skills:  Knowledge of cultural history preferably of Hawaiian and /or Pacific Islands. Ability to use compass, maps, and GPS. Computer literate in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Must possess a valid driver’s license and personal automobile insurance. Additional software knowledge includes familiarity with ArcGIS software or similar.

Physical/Medical Requirements::  Works under strenuous and extreme outdoor conditions. Able to hike up to ten (10) miles per day with backpack weighing up to forty (40) pounds, and camp in remote and rugged areas for periods of several days.

Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must pass a post-offer physical exam within two (2) weeks of hire or may be subject to termination.  Subsequent periodic exams, at least annually, may be required by the employer.  Respirator medical clearance and fitting is required.  All reasonable accommodations will be made based on fitness for duty.  Medical costs will be paid for by the employer.

Post Offer/Employment Conditions:  Must provide a copy of driver’s abstract without citations that will prevent incumbent from driving on Department of Defense (DoD) installations. Must be able to pass a DoD security check for employment as an Army contractor. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months of hire).  Must complete online forty (40) hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training within two (2) weeks of hire or may be subject to termination. Must complete UXO training within six (6) months of hire as job duties will require work in UXO areas. May be selected for additional duties such as use of helicopters but must be certified and be approved by PCSU/RCUH prior to activity.  For helicopter use must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course.

Monthly Salary Range:  $2,105-$3,266/Mon.

Job Opening at RCUH: PTA Curation Specialist

PTA Cultural Resources/Curation Specialist – ID# 13613.  Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), performing project tasks on land controlled by U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii at Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) on the Island of Hawaii. Monthly Salary:  Salary commensurate with qualifications.

DutiesWorks closely with Cultural Resources Program Manager (PTA) in the ongoing inventory, accessioning, cataloging and labeling of PTA archaeological collections.  Maintains archival records, including all photographs, maps, field notes and other significant historical documents.  Provides day-to-day support in implementing the PTA Cultural Resource Program Scope of Work (SOW).  Serves as PCSU-PTA Cultural Resources Curation Specialist to implement programs and management of collections’ documents and material associated with archaeological and historic surveys performed on PTA lands. Works independently to carry out tasks in compliance with Federal, State and Army laws and regulations. Becomes familiar with installation plans, undertakings, and cultural studies and inventories.  Provides preservation guidance and support to a team of archaeologists and architectural historians. Compiles annual report on the Curation Facility for incorporation into the Cultural Resources Annual Report. Participates in education and public outreach activities. Locates vendor sources for equipment and supplies, conducts equipment inventories, and maintenance of equipment. Assists staff to access, evaluate, and implement use and study of collections.

Primary Qualifications:  Education:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Anthropology, Museum Studies or Library Information Science.

Experience:  One to Three (1-3) years of experience in curation of archaeological materials and records, and education and public outreach.

Abil/Know/Skills:  Knowledge of American Association of Museum standards, guidelines and procedures for collections management. Knowledge of collections preservation principles and techniques; knowledge of museum collection storage techniques and protection practices. Knowledge of environmental and pest monitoring principles and techniques with ability to develop environmental/monitoring plans. Knowledge of museum documentation procedures, including accessioning, cataloging and other recordkeeping. Basic knowledge of Sections 106 and 110 of the NHPA and the National Environmental Policy Act as they apply to the management of cultural resources. Knowledge of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. Computer literate in Adobe Acrobat Professional, and Microsoft Office applications, including Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Publisher. Ability to present written correspondence, reports, and recommendations in a clear and concise manner.  Demonstrated ability and willingness to make effective oral and written presentations. Must possess valid driver’s license. Advanced knowledge and experience with Microsoft Access database management, Past Perfect and Adobe Design Standards or Photoshop. Experience performing a variety of cultural resources program tasks, particularly in a governmental agency setting. Experience in the manipulation and restoration of digital images. Skill as a catalyst and motivator to elicit cooperation and compliance actions from diverse individuals and groups.

Job Opening at UH-West O’ahu for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Physical Anthropology (Forensic Anthropology)

Assistant or Associate Professor of Physical Anthropology (Forensic Anthropology)

 

Tenure track, nine-months, full-time (Position #76305), to begin August 1, 2014

 

Duties: This position will be responsible for teaching upper and lower division courses in Physical Anthropology and Forensic Anthropology. Responsibilities include teaching some combination of existing courses–Humankind Emerging, Introduction to Physical Anthropology and Lab, Human Skeletal Biology, Human Ecological Adaptation, Forensic Anthropology, Advanced Techniques in Forensic Anthropology, and/or Senior Practicum–plus related courses in areas of the professor’s expertise. In addition to teaching within their disciplines, all faculty members at UHWO are expected to engage in scholarly activity, participate in curriculum development, provide service to the profession and broader community, teach courses using distance methods, participate in program assessment, advise students and supervise senior projects, practicum  and readings courses, and participate in faculty governance. The person hired will also work closely with our partners for an undergraduate Certificate in Applied Forensic Anthropology with faculty at the nearby Leeward Community College and staff at the Joint Pacific Account Command/Central Identification Laboratory. 

 

Minimum qualifications: Assistant Professor: Earned doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in Physical Anthropology, with a specialization in Forensic Anthropology; evidence of high quality teaching and potential for conducting relevant scholarly and applied research; ability to effectively communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.  Associate Professor: In addition to minimum qualifications for the rank of Assistant Professor, five years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of Assistant Professor and evidence of publications in peer-reviewed journals in the area of Forensic Anthropology.

 

Desirable qualifications: Ability to interact effectively in a multicultural setting; experience teaching and working with highly diverse communities; experience teaching in a Physical or Forensic Anthropology accredited undergraduate program; demonstrated ability to teach distance education courses. Field and/or laboratory experience in Forensic Anthropology or Archaeology and proven ability to write and/or administer grants are also highly desirable.

Pay range: Negotiable, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
